What this paper is about
How this paper will be taught
Overview
Beyond the Basics of Design is structured as two parts: studios dedicated to Design projects and studios dedicated to introducing Typography. It is delivered through a mix of lectures/workshops combination, lab activities, and critique sessions.
Design studios. This portion of the paper is about applying the skills and knowledge learned in DSIGN141, Elements and Principles of Design, to real-life design projects. The aim is to allow you to demonstrate your ability to analyse the brief, research and investigate the topic, and try a variety of initial concepts before making an informed selection from which to develop an appropriately creative solution to the highest possible professional standard. You need to document the complete design process.
Typography studios. This course portion is based on an introduction to typography and its composition within a given frame. Students work on several exercises applying typography to different scenarios.
Design & Typography studios are 3-hour studios each week, plus a 2-hour lecture/workshop once a week. This equates to 6/8 hours per week of contact time. A 15pt paper should be considered 150 hours of work across the 12-week semester. Given this calculation, you should consider the need to do approximately 12.5 hours of work each week for DSIGN142. Therefore, you are expected to complete approximately 6/8 hours of self-directed study each week outside of studios.
Attendance is compulsory, and regularly scheduled assessments will be conducted during studio sessions & lectures.

Assessments
How you will be assessed
The assessment for this paper is based on completing the assignments (both in-class activities and physical submission of work) and on your professional conduct throughout the course. Hand-in of assignments will be in person according to the instructions provided in each specific case. These requirements will also be posted on the Moodle page. Assessment criteria will be supplied via Moodle for each of the assessment items.
All work must include research and process, along with appropriate references and visual aids, such as sketches, previous versions of work, and sources of inspiration, to demonstrate the originality of your work. Process work is considered an important part of any design project and should be available for review for any work that is submitted. You are not allowed to use work created by others without proper acknowledgement or to use AI-assisted tools without citing the sources and obtaining permission from your lecturer. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in academic penalties or charges of plagiarism.
The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 100:0. There is no final exam.
